Answering the Call – Connecting Remote Communities

August 18, 2020

Written by Communications

In early 2020 Xplornet started work alongside the Government of Nova Scotia to find a solution to establish enhanced internet coverage to a variety of communities across the province in a 100-day build commitment.

Xplornet engaged Jason Hart and our Nova Scotia team in late April 2020 to design, build, fabricate, and install nine 45-meter towers, ten new Co-locate sites and two CO sites across the province within the extremely challenging 100-day window.

Our national drafting and engineering departments designed the brand-new custom towers and the fabrication plants in both Elmira and Thorsby went to work fabricating the towers and mounts.

On July 27 our dedicated field crews received the first two towers and by the end of the day on July 29, crews had both towers stacked out, a RAN system up, and 3x MW dishes installed, panned in and live ready for drive testing. On August 3, four more towers arrived, and our crews also had them stacked and ready for Xplornet’s technicians to test well ahead of the August 9 “light-up”.

Operations Manager Jason Hart said, “This was truly a companywide effort with the Design out of St John’s, Drafting out of Surrey, Fabrication out of both Elmira and Thorsby, and the Installation out of Halifax. I’m also extremely proud of the NS branch for hitting every target on this project, all while continuing to ensure that our day to day operations did not suffer.”

**Due to land acquisition issues three of the nine towers were not built in this timeframe, they are being scheduled for a future date.
